a little STAR – GAZING in the WHISTLER won’t hurt, will it?

The Hollywood Glitterati were in attendance and in abundance at our Whistler wedding gig this weekend…Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson, Karly Rae Jepson, Christina Perri…and more. We re-enacted the surprise moment in the wedding scene from “Love Actually”, complete with Gospel Choir ( Candus Churchill and friends, String Quartet and Horn Section (Bill Runge and friends). Justin was just, well, just so young! I studied his “this is me being tough” face and felt compassion for him. The rehearsal did not go particularly well vocally, but Justin was kind and considerate to all. He wore those hipified low slung guy harem pants that are popping onto the fashion scene. Yes as I sat beside Jack Stafford and waited for our moment to leap into action as “the flute section”, I took note of the shoes the woman in front of us was wearing.  Some fantastic art creations with cork and gold ankle straps atop skydive stilettos. My bunion hurt.

When The Time Comes

When The Time Comes

For now, I will stay in the darkened comfort

of my bedroom, shades drawn down like half closed eyes

squeezed against the too bright light.

I will stay here as long as I need to.

When the time comes, perhaps at dusk,

when the light and the world are softer,

I’ll hear a robin’s song and be drawn outside

out into the blue dome of night with golden stars waiting

and see the new moon smile.

Musical Muses: Music and the Filmmaking Process

Thank you Gio for sharing these valuable thoughts…

Wandering Gio's avatarW(A/O)NDERING Filmmaking

I remember a dear friend of mine expressing his anger towards Ennio Morricone: ”I don’t understand why he always tells us when and how to feel. There is no free interpretation of the content, and the emotions are induced and manufactured”. I could understand his perspective, and I can also appreciate the kind of realist cinema he personally cherishes. What I could not understand is why be mad at one of the most powerful ‘formalist’ forces (to use a word dear to him) available in the filmmakers toolset?

In a way, I then knew I was not the only person having felt tricked and betrayed by the power of music, feeling strong emotions towards a narrative and visual content that would probably have left me indifferent if it was not for the score. Years ago, this obsession for music in film, and the filmmaking process,

Stratospheric Lounging @ 7 Dining

Thanks friends for another epic HB & The Naturals night! The band was described as “Stratospheric” – we can deal with that. Don Powrie did a stunning job on drums. He was Bill’s (Runge) first drummer – and Don and I go all the way back to the early days of VCC when we had class in portables. I had just returned from my years in New York, and super enjoyed my new studies with trombonist Dave Robbins at VCC.

Kristian Alexandrov – piano

Bill Runge – saxophones

Brent Gubbels – bass

Don Powrie – drums

Let’s BLOG

If I were a blogger

I’d blo-og in the morning

I’d bl-og in the evening

All over this land,

I’d blog out danger

I’d blog out warning,

I’d blog out love between,

My brothers and my sisters,

All over this land.

If I had a bell…
